I have a bookshelf and an armoire that are both just bare wood, and I was wanting to make them "espresso" color. I found a stain, but I also see some paints that would work. What is better for furniture? Also, I have never painted/stained anything before, is there a topcoat or sealant you put on it?

Dresden, whether you stain or paint really depends on the quality of the wood the furniture is made from. Good quality woods with beautiful grain should be stained. Most unpainted furniture is not made from this type of wood altho they can be finished either way. Perhaps you could try the stain on an inconspicuous part of the piece to see if you like it. You can always paint over it.
