I have a bookshelf and an armoire that are both just bare wood, and I was wanting to make them "espresso" color. I found a stain, but I also see some paints that would work. What is better for furniture? Also, I have never painted/stained anything before, is there a topcoat or sealant you put on it?

Dresden, whether you stain or paint really depends on the quality of the wood the furniture is made from. Good quality woods with beautiful grain should be stained. Most unpainted furniture is not made from this type of wood altho they can be finished either way. Perhaps you could try the stain on an inconspicuous part of the piece to see if you like it. You can always paint over it.

Easy! You're sure it's wood? Is it varnished ?You should sand it a little, since wood is likely to have had polish applied, no matter what finish it has. Use a fine sandpaper, go over every inch, sanding in the direction of the grain. You don't need to sand right down to bare wood but enough to scuff the finish so paint will hold. Wipe off dust with a clean rag and water or paint thinner, depending on what paint you'll use. You would be best to use an oil-based paint, it stands up much better to the wear that any furniture gets but you could use water based and if you do, think about a floor paint for wear reasons. Use a bristle brush for oil, synthetic for water based.

Latex is generally used for the dining room or front room walls. Oil based paints are generally used in the kitchen and bathroom, but Latex paint has come such a long way you can even use it in both those rooms as well.

If you want to paint your bedroom blue with deep purple stripes for instance paint the walls the blue first. Let it dry well for 24 hours. Then go to your hardware store and buy special tape for painted walls. Measure your walls for the distance and width of each stripe and mark with a pencil.

paint is applied in a thin coat to various surfaces such as wood, metal, or stone. Although its primary purpose is to protect the surface to which it is applied, paint also provides decoration.
