Turn a Home Accessory into a Family Heirloom

By : Holly

As a young girl, I remember laying on my mother?s bed and looking at the beautiful quilt she had there. This quilt was made of many different squares of fabric, to form all different quilt squares, I don?t remember any two being alike. Even now as I remember this quilt, I believe it is the neatest quilt I?ve ever seen. What a priceless memory this has been for me. My mother still has this quilt, and I would like to bring it to my home one day.

That is what decorating is all about, building priceless memories. You never know what your family will find to treasure, what will be that memory builder and turn into a family heirloom, mine is a quilt with lots of different fabric, maybe that is where my love for quilting has come from. Yours maybe be a fun little home accessory, mirror, a picture frame or even a piece of furniture.

So how do you go about finding that perfect home accessory, quilt, mirror or picture frame. What makes the family heirloom? I don?t really believe that it needs to be expensive, but something that catches your interest and something you enjoy, if you enjoy your little home accessory I guarantee that it will come to be cherished by your family.

You might already have something in your home that you are particularly attached to, but maybe you haven?t brought out to share. If you don?t have a treasure, go shopping and see what strikes your interest, bring it into your home, put it to use. If it?s a quilt, put it on your bed and then tell stories with your children, or cuddle up with the quilt and watch TV. If it?s a mirror, hang it you living room and build a wall grouping around it, that is so easy to do put picture frames around it that frame the faces of your loved ones, maybe use a home accessory such as flowers, or other pictures, whatever you do make it the centerpiece of your home. Maybe you have a throw that you?ve put away to ?save? bring it out and put it on your sofa or in a oversized chair in your living room. You might have a table runner or other cloth that needs to be placed over your coffee table, then bring out home accessories, books or candles, and let your family see this treasure. I certainly believe that if you family can?t see your treasure, and it always remains hidden, then no memories will be made and it will eventually become something Mom kept around. If you go into someone?s home do they proudly share with the story of how their Mother always kept the family treasure in the cedar chest? No, they proudly share with you stories on how the mirror you admire hung on their Mother?s wall, or how their Grandmother dusted the clock everyday and how she saved to buy the clock.

The main thing is to bring out this treasure and let your family treasure it also, let cherished memories be centered around this treasure, then you will build a family heirloom. Remember your family heirloom doesn?t have to be an expensive piece of furniture, it might be a cute home accessory, mirror, useful quilt, fun little throw, or even a clock, but it does need to be liked and treasured by you and displayed or used with your family to build priceless memories.
