Can you have an Effective Garden in a Small Space?

By : Honey B. Wackx

Are you one of those people who like gardens but thing you don't have enough space to have a garden where you live? I used to think that only people who had a lot of space could have a nice garden. But that is not true. You can have a small garden and still have a very nice one.

A garden does not have to be large for it to be effective. Such a huge garden is more for some institution or public place and not something most homes could even handle. The upkeep alone would take some serious time to keep up, let alone to keep nice looking.

The majority of people just don't have space for a garden like that. In fact, probably most people who don't have extra large yards or otherwise large expansive outdoors areas do not have large gardens. But you, even if you have a small area can, however, grow thriving plants in that area as long as there is access to sunlight.

Gardens have grown in many places - from a small patch of ground outside of a home to planting pots placed outside ones front door. The size of your garden doesnt matter because its the quality of your gardening skills that will provide you with thriving plants.

Youll want to research the plants you want to grow within your garden. Find out what plants can be planted near each other, which ones need the most sunlight and any care instructions needed to grow a particular type of plant. As a slight diversion you could take a walk around the neighborhood and take a look at any gardens you happen to pass and see what plants others have chosen that will grow well in your climate.

This will help you plan the placement of your garden, whether you plant in a small patch of land or in planters. Next, youll need to find out when each plant should be planted. Some need to be planted ahead of others, so plan accordingly.

Now youre ready to purchase the plants or seeds, whichever you choose to grow in your garden. Make sure you have the right size planters for your garden if you go with gardening pots. The plants need some space to grow, so dont overcrowd them. Also make sure there is sufficient light for the types of plants you want to plant.

Don't cut corners on the soil, so plan to use top quality potting soil. Your plants could use the extra effort to provide them with the nutrients they need to grow and thrive. There are different kinds of soil available so you may need to ask your local gardening center to help you decide which soil would be best for your garden.

Even gardens grown in small areas can easily have problems with insects. Many types of insects are attracted to plants, so make sure you purchase plants that are inviting to the insects that will keep the harmful ones under control. That way they wont have time to destroy your garden.

Some fertilizing soil has ingredients mixed in that will help repel some of the pests, so check them out as well. If you feel you must use pesticides, use them sparingly. Most of these harmful chemicals can affect the plants as well as animals and children, so use only whats absolutely necessary for your garden.

Every garden, no matter what the size, needs to be nurtured. Like anything else it has to be cared for. You will need to stay on top of the weeds. Some of them grow very fast and if not checked can get out of control. The soil needs to be aerated once in awhile and watered as often as needed. No garden will thrive without the proper care and nurturing from the gardener, so dont neglect them. Some gardens look very nice, but they didn't get that way without care from the gardener.

Small gardens can thrive just as much as larger ones, so if you dont have the space for a big garden, just make use of the space you do have and grow healthy and robust plants. With the proper care, any garden can produce excellent plants. Actually it should be easier to keep up a small garden as there is less work to do. You also have more options where to have your garden if it is small versus a large one.

Like anything else you will need to plan your garden if it is to have a good chance to be a creation you will be proud of. Because your garden is small don't take that as a sign it doesn't need any planning. It does. Take enough time to plan out your garden. You want to make use of the best areas of the small space that you have. Just because your garden is small is no reason it cannot be the best in the area.

Yes you certainly have an effective garden in a small space. With careful planning and proper care your small garden could then be the equal or even outmatch any large garden if you put forth your best effort. Imagine the good feeling you'll have when others marvel at the sight of your garden and wonder why yours is so much better than their large, but unsightly garden.
