What Size Lawnmower Do I Need?
By : Mike Gardener
You have grass to cut and you need a lawnmower but how big a lawnmower do you need?
If you go to a local store you will see dozens of different lawnmowers. Different colors, different sizes. Powered by electric or gas powered and manual push mowers. There are even robot lawnmowers available now and we should not forget about the giants of home lawn mowing, the ride on lawnmower. So which is suitable for you and your grass cutting needs and how do you decide?
You should first look at the area of grass you need to cut and think about how much time you are prepared to spend cutting grass.
If you only have a small patch of grass then you should not buy a mower that is too big. It will be unwieldy and difficult to manhandle around the garden.
Where will you store your lawnmower?
Make sure you have the room to keep your mower under cover. If it is so big you have to leave it outside then it will be affected by the weather. Make sure that you can get a mower to the grass you need to cut. A large mower might not fit through narrow gates that lead to your grass and that would be rather annoying if you have to knock down your fence just to cut your grass.
Finally check the weight of the lawnmower. Powered lawnmowers that drive the wheels as well as the cutter require less manhandling as you can use the power to drive the mower so the weight is of less importance but if you need to carry the lawnmower at any time you need to be able to lift it safely and comfortably.
Having decided on the size of mower that you can manage and will fit in your property you can work out roughly how long you will spend grass cutting by measuring to see how many runs along the grass you will need to make.
Divide the width of your lawn by the width of your mower and that will tell you how many runs you need. Next you should walk along the length of the lawn at a steady pace to see how long that takes. Multiply the time by the number of runs and you will have a good idea how long you will need to spend cutting your grass.
